One of the perks of being a wildlife artist is having the opportunity to travel to some fantastic places in order to get the appropriate reference for my work. MJ Face to Face with Nature! Possibly one of the most memorable was my visit to Rwanda in March 2000 to see the fabulous mountain Gorillas.

"The country is still very unsafe after the civil war and genocide, Painting with the children in a Rwandan schoolMy friends and colleagues, Steve Winterburn and Alan Hunt accompanied me on the trip. We were sponsored by the Halcyon Gallery, and were being chaperoned by F.F.I. and travellers wishing to see the Gorillas are escorted by armed guards through the impenetrable jungle. Despite the hardship of the terrain etc, we had a fantastic time and were rewarded with incredible encounters with the Gorillas, (especially the one that nearly took my head off, but that's another story) we all got on so well that we have subsequently been on other trips together, such as the visit to see the Tigers of Ranthambhor.
